Public Domain Movies Question

George asks…

Does You Tube have the power to ban someone for life ?

I don’t plan on being banned, I just like to manipulate public domain movies for fun. But one was blocked worldwide…so I deleted it….why are they making life less happy for common people who have no plan for stealing and getting rich ? I don’t.

scottparat answers:

Youtube can do whatever they want with what you upload, or your account. Don’t get them mad and you won’t have problems.

William asks…

How do I determine if a movie is still copyrighted? or if it is in the public domain?

I have been tracking this film, Gigot, on this blog.

And ultimately am trying to determine how and if this movie will ever be distributed by a movie studio.

Any bored copyright lawyers out there?

scottparat answers:

A search of the US Copyright Office catalog reveals that the film Gigot is still protected by copyright. It was released on 9/27/1962 and its copyright was renewed on 12/20/1990 (Reg. No. RE0000505374).

The film will not enter the public domain until January 1, 2058 (95 years from date of publication).
