Microblogging is defined as: blogging done with severe space or size constraints typically by posting frequent brief messages about personal activities.
Several years ago I started hearing some of the morning shows and some of the news broadcasts in my area start telling people, “You can now follow us on Twitter.” I had no idea what the heck they were talking about but, these days, if you do not have a Twitter account or a Facebook page you are in the minority. Microblogging on sites like twitter can become addicting! Microblogging can also be used to spread religious, political or corporate messages within a social community in a matter of minutes. Democrats and liberals have tried to silence people like Rush Limbaugh, but now with twitter and facebook that will never happen.
There are other social networking sites but these are definitely the two most popular. This is called microblogging and it is used to let others know just exactly what you are doing, when you are doing it, throughout your day if you choose to make frequent posts.
Twitter has over 200 million users and Facebook has over 570 million users and to make a post you must know that the number of characters you can use to get your message across is limited to 140-200 characters per post.
This is why a new language, called textspeak, has been born. There are hundreds, if not thousands, of new ways to say just about everything using abbreviations and shortcuts, such as, LOL for laughing out loud, and BTW for by the way.
Whole words have been reduced to single letters and/or numbers, so instead of typing in a sentence like, “Are you ready to go?”, you get “R u rdy 2 go?” The first sentence uses up 20 characters (this includes the spaces between the words btw) and the second “sentence” uses only 13. So you save 7 characters.
When you only get 140 you need to save as much space as you can.
Ashton Kucher is probably one of the most prolific microbloggers on the planet. If you watch Dancing with the Stars you can see the Twitter feed down along the bottom of the screen as the show progresses. Many other TV shows do this as well, like the sports channels and during sports tournaments.
Even President Barack Obama used Twitter to post to all of his followers when he was campaigning before being elected in 2008.
When someone posts on Twitter they are said to be Tweeting and their Tweets are usually telling their followers something about their personal life that may interest said follower.
The beauty of all of this is the fact that you can get real-time, up-to-date information because you can see the posts of the Tweeter immediately on your computer, phone, or other mobile device. If you are not currently signed in you can even get alerts that someone has made a post sent to your email.
There is no law saying that you have to respond with your own Tweet but the option is there nonetheless.
Microblogging on Twitter or Facebook has made communicating with family, and friends (and frankly, complete strangers) easier and more convenient due to the real-time aspect of it. Of course, you could still call on occasion. Sometimes it is nice just to hear someone else’s voice, especially if they are a loved one.
