Important Rules for Email Marketing

By

How many times a day do you check your email? Once, three times?  Maybe ten times per day?  Most people these check their email throughout the day, whether it be through notifications they receive on their work computers, or on an iPhone or Blackberry. Regardless, email is becoming more and more prevalent.

Because of this, Email Marketing continues to be one of the most effective mediums for targeting your audience with your message.  There are a few important rules to follow, however, to ensure that your message gets read and that people don’t get offended and unsubscribe to your list.

The first rule, is that you’ve got to build a list.  There are several tools out there to accomplish this.  ListJoe.com, ViralURL.com are two of my favorites, although there are multiple sites that have lists that you can broadcast a message to, inviting the members to come check out your site.

Once they’ve come to your site and you’ve received information from them, you have to manage your own list.  Aweber, iContact, and Mail Chimp all accomplish this.  Personally, I find that http://www.Aweber.com is the most effective and useful.  Their support is first class, and their ability to build dynamic templates and forms within HTML email is unmatched.

The second rule: You’ve got to maintain your relationship with your list.  Once you’ve got people ‘opted in’ to your email list, it’s important to build a relationship with them.  It’s been said that the average buyer won’t move on a product until they’ve been ‘touched’ by a marketing product 7 times.  Every email that you send out is an additional reminder of your product.

The great thing about sites like Aweber, is you can set up what are called AutoResponders which are basically a pre-defined batch of messages that will transmit on the frequency you set ahead of time.  As people join your list, they get these messages transmitted to them over time.

Finally, the Cardinal Rule for Email Marketing is to RESPECT YOUR MEMBERS.  While email is a great medium for getting your message to prospects, overdone, it can become an annoyance, and you will lose members quickly if they perceive you are ’spamming’ them.

If you take time and put some real thought into your messages, they will respond appropriately.  Remember to keep your messages personal.  Share stories, anecdotes, funny stories about your dog or kids or whatever, and people will likely respond in kind.

Always remember when you write your Email Marketing messages that there is a person who will be reading that message.  The more you connect with them, the more likely they are to respond.
