Something today’s small business owner is very aware of is the cost of offline advertising. Such as radio and TV comercials, newspaper and magazines, direct mail, yellow page phone books and the list just goes on and on. Each one of these can cost from a few dollars to thousands of dollars, depending on the size of the ad or the length of the commercial. And in many cases these ads may be less than effective. Consequently, small business owners are looking for cheaper advertising and more bang for their advertising dollars. So they in turn have turned to online advertising.

Maybe you haven’t really noticed, but Google has become extremely important in the online world. As Google continues to grow, it has an estimated worth of over $200 billion dollars, they have become the leader of online advertising. One of the ways they do this is to offer the entire world a free place to find information and products. They are able to do this because, this is not where they make their money.

Google is heavily into the business of advertising and they do it in the Internet marketing style. They realized in their infancy there was a monstrous demand from people looking for any and everything. This may seem really obvious, however let me explain. In the past, a few big companies dominated the advertising scene and spent millions on advertising campaigns which were designed to reach a large audience of people. They were hoping that a percentage of that audience would buy their products.

Google really had no interest in that particular group of people. Google instead realized that there were an unlimited amount of small and large businesses and if they could offer those same businesses a way to reach potential customers for pennies on the dollar, then Google would stand to make a lot of money. We are talking about billions. Since they already knew that people were searching for a lot of things,they stood a very good chance of dominating the advertising business.

Internet Marketing was not born with Google, however it has grown with them. This method is actually revolutionary if you think about it. They have connected a group of hungry customers with businesses. Those little advertising boxes that are located on the top, bottom and either side of every Google search you do on the internet, or a prime example of reaching out to targeted potential clients.

What this means for Internet marketing is that you will not have to compete with the other advertisers and search through the people who are not interested in your product to begin with. The two sides of Internet marketing are building relationships and finding the hungry customer. The more obvious one is the hungry customer. If a person is looking for a way to stop the feline incontinence and you have a solution to stop the feline incontinence, then it should be obvious that you should be talking to the person that wants what you have.

The Internet will allow you to do this, and usually for a fairly small price. Though you may have seen it done, the other aspect is not as obvious. That would be the conversation side. If you have ever used Amazon, you have seen a master at work. Amazon makes a concentrated effort to get to know their customer, and offer things that they think their customer may like.

Targeted internet marketing is what Amazon uses to get to the top, they do not use an advertising business. You can do this, just as easily. And you should.

You need to corral your customers and not allow them to wander off and then make sure that you give them what they want. If you run an advertising business and wish to survive you need to be offering your advertising customers what they want. You need to offer new ways to clients that will allow them to find the hungry customer. Do you know, what is going to save your advertising business?

Offline Marketing…. Not Always Easy!

The entire process, known within internet marketing circles as Offline Marketing is not always an easy method of making money online. I create offline directories so I’m always looking for people who need help or make comments about offline marketing. I ran across one such person in a forum the other day and this is what he had to say:

So first of all… I DID IT!
I opened up a company

The ‘working’ part of it is working
the making money part of it is not.

I need to find advertisers who want to promote on my site.
Today I messaged 30 local stores, none of them replied back.

Now I got phone calls + meeting them in person as my steps #2 and #3 since step #1 (email) didn’t work.

How effective is walking in there in person?
And do you think they’ll be down for a quick 10 minute meeting?

Its just … Ugh… I just want to make my first 5 stores, make some $$$ from there, and then I’ll know it’ll go a lot smoother

Well….I couldn’t help myself and was in a giving mood so I gave the guy some suggestions. It was late and I don’t know how coherent I was so you might have to read it a couple of times :) but my advice was sincere based on my experiences doing offline marketing….or working with local business people.

Here’s an easy way……. well one way to start getting customers…..this takes a little work, and you can do in conjunction with your existing marketing plan.

Focus on a city or town, pick out a specific market. Lets say Dentists.

Grab a domain for your city and specific market. Let’s say your in Madison and you’re gonna work with Dentists. Find a domain that would include MadisonDentists.com ……something like that.

Go to your Madison online yellow pages. Create a one page Madison Dentists Directory. Use your yellow page info to add 5, 10 or 20 dentists. Do some backlinking, bookmarking or whatever and get some traffic to your new site, try and get it on page 1 of google local.

Now there are several approaches you can take when calling or emailing Madison Dentists. (actually your approach can be anything as long as its unique) If you have your simple directory on page 1 of google I’m sure you can see how you might use this. You use it as an example of your expertise!

Option 1
You can sell them an inner page of your directory for a monthly fee or one time fee. Again, a foot in the door to sell a more complete website and services.

Option 2

If the dentist doesn’t have a website, sell him your full offline package.

Option 3

If he does have a website and its not on page one, tell him where he needs to be and offer your services.

Option 4

Lets say he’s on page one and has a hot looking site. From experience most sites are monuments to the doctors ego, they need to be reworked. Depending on your experience you could offer a consult…..leading into a monthly seo fee for you.

It almost never fails, none of these guys has an autoresponder and if they do, it isn’t on page one. Explain the benefits of an autoresponder….and sell sell sell!

I’ll give you one more use for the little directory you just built.

Sell it! Sell it to the top bidder!

If you were able to get your little directory on page 1, go down your lists of dentists, in this case, ask them if they would like to own the site. Give them the stats….ie, 500 visist a month etc. ……. I know one guy who does this and sells some of them for 1000’s and then charges the purchaser for any website changes or maintenance

The key is to use the little one page directory as a foot in the door approach. More and more directories are coming online every day, the more unique you make yours the better for you. I’ve set up these directories with maybe 10 listings and then create maybe 2 inner pages for 2 dentists so I can use as an example. I’ll even add an autoresonder to the site and give something free if it applies to the particular market……that really helps to create interest.

For one town close to me I created a custom directory for the entire town. I grabbed about 10 local businesses and gave them a position on the first page and inner pages. Drove some traffic and these businesses were getting calls and leads….they loved it and made great references for me to work the rest of the town.

You really are limited to your imagination when working with local businesses.

Here’s the bottom line. You need to be confident in your ability to create an online presence for your offline customers the will result in them making money. Most of these folks are really hurting….on the verge of giving up and you just might have what they need to be successful.

There’s a saying that goes something like this: “Help enough other people get what they want and you”ll get everything your want and more!” I heard that from Zig Zigglar and if you truly make that your motto….sooner or latter things will start to go your way.

Don’t give up.

Remember we are in the toughest economy in our lifetime and probably our parents…..I’m 56.

Remember also, offline marketing is some sort of magic technique where people come running your way giving stacks of cash or as some say “offline gold”…..that’s pure crap, at least that’s been my experience.

My sons gets emails and phone calls almost on a daily basis with someone trying to show them how to do their website better, get them more business, rank for more terms…you name it.

That’s your competition.

The directory approach isn’t for everyone, however, you’ve already taken action. All this takes is 10 bucks and some hosting which you probably already have. Hope you give it a shot and let me know how it goes!
