Overview of RSS Feeds

OVERVIEW of RSS FEEDS

RSS, or Really Simple Syndication (sometimes referred to as Rich Site Summary) is a means by which blogs can broadcast their content to a number of services and individuals easily. Some have gone so far as to argue that RSS is one of the chief reasons why blogging holds so much potential. An RSS feed collects the content of your post (depending on your software, you can opt to syndicate the entire post, just a headline, or some other combination) and then sends it in readable, plain text, to any of the targets you might choose.

rssfeed

Bloggers often submit their RSS feeds to popular blog directories, RSS directories and search engines. Users can then find the feeds in which they are interested and “subscribe to them,” reading them with an RSS feed reader. They may also simply read your feed and then hop on over to your site. RSS feeds are a great way of promoting your blog. There is also some evidence to suggest that RSS feeds can serve to boost the results of your blog in search engine rankings. They are also a wonderful way of getting noticed by at least one of the major search engines.

CREATING AN RSS FEED

Your blogging software will probably handle the process of creating an RSS feed for your blog automatically. For instance, those blogging at Blogger.com are automatically “given” an RSS feed (in Atom format) that they can burn and use. Other blogging services provide RSS feeds, as well.

If your blog service provider or software doesn’t automatically create an RSS feed for your blog, you can build one yourself. Those experienced with HTML may want to hand-code their RSS feed. Those of us who prefer a quicker solution can choose from a variety of software tools (many of which are freeware) to accomplish the goal.

SUBMITTING YOUR RSS FEED

Having a feed will not do you much good if no one reads it! Thus, you must share your RSS feed with others. This can be done, in large measure, by using one of the multiple site ping services mentioned earlier. Pingoat, for instance, will request your RSS feed and will transmit it to a number of sites that aggregate these feeds.
You can also opt to submit your feed to any number of other RSS aggregators. A relatively long list of options, for instance, is currently available at http://www.rss-specifications.com/rss-submission.htm.

A great place to manage your RSS feed needs is at Feedburner, which can be found at http://www.feedburner.com. This free service provides you with a number of tools that can make sharing your RSS feed easier and more effective. It also offers free circulation traffic (just in case you want to know how many people are tracking your feed) and a lot of handy ways to help other subscribe to your feed.

You can skip manual submissions by using a service to submit your rss feeds to, I use an Automatic RSS Submission service that submits to over 200 rss directories.

RSS FEEDS AS A WAY INTO YAHOO

There is a now well-known technique that may enable your site to be discovered and indexed by the Yahoo search engine in record time. This technique makes use of your RSS feed and is a relatively simple thing to do.

button_rss

You must have a free Yahoo account in order to do this. Create an account if you do not already have one. The sign up procedure is fast and simple.
After logging into your Yahoo account, go to the “My Yahoo” page. There you will find an option to add content to your page. You can add content in the form of your blog’s RSS feed. It is a simple and intuitive process that will only require you to have the URL of your RSS feed (which is easily locatable via your blogging software or service).

One you add your RSS feed to your content page, Yahoo will track the RSS feed in order to keep your page updated with developments. As a result, you have instructed Yahoo to find and note changes made to your blog.

This strategy has successfully allowed many blogs to find their way into Yahoo results in record time. It has been referred to as the Yahoo backdoor and is now a practice commonly used when launching a new blog. With greater use by more people, its effectiveness may have diminished somewhat (especially in terms of search engine results), but it still is the fastest way to crack into any of the big three search engines.

BONUS TIPS
1. Don’t forget to update! Make sure you remember to either ping using a mass-ping service or to manually alert RSS aggregators about your feed every time you update. Otherwise, you are losing some of the potential value of the feed.

2. Make your feed a moneymaker! Some bloggers who are particularly interested in making their blog pay may want to consider using their RSS feed as a vehicle for advertising. Google’s Adsense program has operated a program to allow some Adsense publishers place ads in their feeds and other means of feed advertising are growing.

eCommerce plugin, digital store plugin and paypal shopping cart plugin

Anyone who’s been working online experiences severe bouts of “put up a site and never touch it again” :)…..I’m kidding of course, however, sometimes it becomes difficult to get motivated and go back to update older sites.

I’ve got some really old sites that need to major remodeling and I’ve been procrastinating severely!

The reason is because they are static sites and I want to either convert them to wordpress sites or I want to turn it into a wordpress site. Those really are 2 different tasks. The first instance, I would have to take all exsiting pages and turn them into either wordpress pages or wordpress posts. In the second case, I would leave the existing static site intact and add a wordpress blog, any further additions to the site would be done through the worpdress blog.

One site I want to turn into a membership site and I’ve been researching solutions for turning a wordpress blog into a membership site. It’s amazing how many wordpress membership plugins have entered the scene in the last year….some expensive and all encompassing and some simple and cheap. It’s important to keep in mind the ultimate purpose of the membership. Simple membership sites known as Micro-Memberships are easy to set up and run with the right system and if you use wordpress with a membership plugin….setting up and maintaining these micro memberships becomes very easy. So….my goal is to turn a couple of my sites into these micro membership sites and see what happens.

I have another site with tons of ebooks, videos, smallreports and a variety of other eproducts. I wanted to turn it into a type of directory site that I’m sure you’ve seen, however, I wanted to take advantage of wordpress’s seo capabilities and easy managment, so, I’ve been looking for an ecommerce plugin that would work specifically with digital downloads. I think I found one at Tips and Tricks HQ….in fact you should visit the site because you’ll find a variety of good and free stuff, but they have a very nice eCommerce Plugin for Digital Products that I’m anxious to try out.

My other project is to turn an exsiting static hodgepodge site into a ecommerce site. This becomes a priority because it’s my wife’s site and someting I’ve been promising to do for a long time. Liz is an artist and paints glassware. So the site sells hand painted glasses of various types and other one off art pieces. There’s a shopping cart on the site now that uses paypal, however it is very archaic and shipping and handling charges are a real pain….besides all that the site was one of my first and now looks horrible!

So….I really need to spruce it up and work and getting some traffic to the site. WordPress is my best option and there are a ton of WordPress ecommerce themes or storefront type themes. In fact, the options that are available today for creating a storefront or ecommerce site with wordpress are absolutely staggering. I’ve been researching the best method of creating a storefront or just a site that I can sell a few products with for the last month and it seems as though wordpress is a given but the selection of a specific method of creating the ecommerce site is mind numbing.

So, as I go on with my research I’ve decided to compile a list of resources and recommend what I think to be the best solutions to:

  • ecommerce with wordpress
  • digital store plugin
  • storefront with wordpress
  • directory type site with wordpress
  • membership site with wordpress

Right now I’m leaning toward a WP plugin from Tips and Tricks HQ called WP eStore Plugin for the digital store, it has everything I need. Integration with Aweber, built in shopping cart, instant delivery and security for eproducts, easy checkout, integration with eMember Plugin, integration with NextGen Gallery for digital images, and a whole lot more. I’ll keep track of my progress as I move forward with the selection of these plugins and let you know how they work…..so keep tuned!

As far as Liz’s site that sells physical products, I’m not sure yet. The Market Theme is an ecommerce storefront theme with shopping cart, everything is built in and looks very nice. They have some nice example sites. There’s another theme and shopping cart combination that I just found at Shopperpress.com, it offers even more, though I still need to investigate.

When remodeling any website I would caution you not to just jump into the first thing that looks good. Do your due diligence and make sure your research is good. Changing an existing ecommerce site or creating a new one is not a process you want to go through twice…..especially after pages get spidered and indexed.

Review of Slick Autoposter and Article Stalker

Thought I’d take a second and let you guys know how Slick Autoposter and Article Stalker is working. The thought of autoposting or autoblogging can seem daunting to many, but in reality all you need is a few good wordpress plugins and you’ll quickly see some results.

First, Slick Autoposter is is a wordpress plugin that will autopost to your wordpress blog a variety of different ways. The reasons people use autoblogging are legion, yet the purist will call it evil while in truth it will save anyone’s butt that has more than one wordpress blog. One of the biggest problems for the blog owner is keeping up with your blog posts. You really need to post at least once a day, otherwise Google will think your blog is irrelevant. When looking at autoposters you want to make sure you can randomize the posting, there are some autoposters that will post plr articles, some do datafeeds, some post rss feeds and some will post entire books. Slickautoposter does this and a whole lot more, I’d like to see you buy it for your own benefit, so go over to the salespage and take a look at all the fuctions. I can see an argument getting started here, sure, if you click on one of my affiliate links then I’ll make a few bucks and that’s a good thing. But, that’s not why I do this, I like to help people who are looking for direction or stumbling along and one way I can do that is to expose them to what works for me and my friends. Whether you do anything with it is totally up to you. I you buy it and need help, send me an email. Contact me through this blog, I’d be glad to help!

articlestalkermanIn the graph below you can see how Slick Autoposter and Article Stalker doubled my traffic in a few short weeks. The best thing is, once I set up a autopost, I’m done and can get to work on something else. The big benefit of Article Stalker is that AS pulls articles with full text of the article and then posts the entire article. Almost all autoposters will only post a portion of the article, which becomes irritating to the reader of the blog post. I was shocked to see how Slick Autoposter using articles from Article Stalker more than doubled the traffic to my blog.

To be fair I must mention that I am also using a wordpress plugin called Auto Social Poster which I have to contribute much of the success to. I’ve been using Auto Social Poster for almost 2 years and although skeptical at first, I’ve been surprised by it’s effectiveness. Often times the guru’s will tell you to buy this and do that while showing you the great results they get. When truthfully, they leave out some of the details. Auto Social Poster is a powerful plugin because it will randomly submit a social bookmark to a social networking site on each post. If I go through the trouble of looking for the proper long tail keywords for a blog post, write the post and then submit it……I’ll find my post on somewhere between page 1 to 5 of Google within an hour. Now if you combine the work of Auto Social Poster with Slick Autoposter and Article Stalker you’ll find the results stunning. You’ll pay anywhere from $300 to $400 dollars for the two plugins and one script, but you can use them on unlimited domains. These are powerful tools and I guarantee they will get you results if you use them properly. In fact, I had to pay for a seminar to find out the Auto Social Poster (ASP) was one guru’s secret weapon.

The reason (ASP) is fairly secret is that people just don’t want to pay for their tools and think they can get results with free tools. You can do a lot with free tools, but real money producing internet marketing tools will get you there before you get frustrated and quit. Let me give you an example. As a carpenter I can build a house with a box of nails, a hammer and hand saw…..it will take a long time! If you give me an air nailer, electric saw that same house can be framed in a couple of weeks. The same goes for making money online. Invest in some real tools and see if you don’t get some real results!

My Traffic Doubled By Using Slick Autoposter and Article Stalker

As with any tool, don’t abuse these tools or you’ll risk getting your blog delisted. I can’t say that for sure, but only assume. In other words, you wouldn’t want to set Slick to start posting 5 articles a day, every day for the next 6 months. That would surely get Google alarmed. I always experiment with anything that is automated to see how its going to work and then  I install the scipt or plugin on my primary blogs.

Here’s a Testimonial I posted for Slick Autoposter!

I thought I’d stop by and hype you up a little :)

I wanted to give you a quick review of Slick Autoposter and Auto Stalker for the benefit of your customers.

Seriously, Ed’s products are always top notch worth the investment. Slick Autoposter is one of my favorite tools. I have some health problems which interrupt my posting schedule on my blogs, Slick has saved my butt so many times I can’t remember!

Just recently I started using another one of Ed’s products, Article Stalker, and when Article Stalker is combined with Slick Autoposter you have a pretty powerful weapon. At first I wasn’t sure about the articles that Article Stalker pulled and I was a little skeptical I’d get any traffic from the articles. Quite frankly, I thought that Slick would be posting articles from Article Stalker and that would keep Google happy.

Much to my surprise, I started getting daily traffic from the articles posted by Slick Autoposter. The quality of the articles is excellent and I even get people commenting on them.

Anyway, Slick is a potent weapon. Combine it with Article Stalker and you go nuclear!

I was surprised when I checked out some stats, but it looks like Slick & Article Stalker doubled my traffic….Thanks Ed :)

You’ll see a small downturn in traffic…..that was my fault because I had the blog offline for a period of time. Otherwise as you can see, Google started sending me traffic after autoposting for a couple of weeks.
