Should I Install A Wordpress Blog on an Existing Website
Let me share a quick personal story.
I hesitate to share my url’s because these sites are so pathetic. But please keep in mind http://www.desktop-wealth.com was the first website I ever built….I’m guessing about 4 years ago, maybe more. The front page looks like a billboard and violates just about every rule for website building you can….I’m embarassed to share it
Since it was my first site, I experimented with all kinds of scripts, added between 600 and 3000 pages…who knows maybe more, some are interlinked….some are just hanging out there. I experimented with some autogenerated pages, video pages, camtasia tutorials….basically its just a hodgepodge of non-linked yet some really good content.
I was going to redo the site but just couldn’t dump all those pages.
I decided to add a wordpress blog to the site. Before I added the blog I had an average or 25 to 50 visitors a day with a PR that would hover between 2 and 3.
I added a blog, really my first wordpress blog. I had a couple of Blogger blogs for a few years that I worked very hard on, they were getting traffic and making some sales…..Google decided they didn’t like my blogs and one day they were gone….and honestly, I didn’t do anything wrong, I swear.
Anyway I added a blog to my site http://www.desktop-wealth.com/blog/ ………once again, it was my first one, I’m a little embarrassed of it, but I’ve added so many tweaks that I’m afraid and don’t have the time to set up a new theme.
Now…with my pride dashed…..I just wanted to share with you what happened when I added a blog to the structure within that old site.
First of all I don’t blog regularly. I recycle a lot of content. But I do add product reviews for stuff I’ve used or was able to trial. I do try to offer value to any reader who stumbles by, I’ll use my own forum posts in different forums and repost them in my blog.
Once again, there’s mistakes all over the blog. My biggest mistake is that I don’t even have any way to capture vistors or bribe them with some worthless offer:)
I really just wanted to play around with wordpress, see how it works, check out the coding and try and get a handle on the wordpress platform. I use it to test things like Andy’s new videos on social bookmarketing.
Ok…it’s been about a year since I installed the blog. The main site www.desktop-wealth.com now has a pr of 4 and I get around 300-400 visitors a day.
I have a couple of posts that get 200 to 400 visits a month. Usually because I use trackbacks…no spam stuff.
So, in my humble opinion, I would find a good wordpress theme and install that blog on your site yesterday…post when you can and watch what happens.
One more thing, because I watched Andy’s video I did some social bookmarking but I ended up using www.socialmarker.com (just wanted to see how that site worked) it hasn’t been 24 hours yet and the post that I bookmarked has had almosts 70 unique visitors! It will be intersting to see what happens.
Good Luck,
Scott

One More Thing

Thought you might be intersted, whenever try to make a thoughtful post in a forum, I’ll do it in a text editor and then save it. Never know when I might use it. This time I posted on my blog and then used the social submission site to submit to 12 sites. Within an hour I had around 40 unique visitors!
